LAST WEDNESDAY Rochdale Harriers competed in races at Saddleworth and Helmshore.
In the six mile race at Saddleworth, speedy brothers David and Matt Proctor were amongst the favourites to win. David is an elite standard 1500m track runner, having trialled for this year’s Beijing Olympics. Younger brother Matt is rapidly catching him up and won this year’s Norden 6 mile road race against stiff opposition.
The smart money would have been on one of the brothers to win at Saddleworth. However that was before Andi Jones appeared. Jones has a long list of recent victories under his belt, including a sub-15 minute 5K race and winning the Snowden race for the third year in a row.
Ultimately the distance and type of race favoured Andi Jones and he won with over 2 minutes to spare in 29 minutes 36 seconds.
David Proctor ran extremely well, claiming second place (32 min 09 sec). Matt was not far behind in third position (32 min 33 sec). Some interesting race battles lie ahead between these two brothers.
Rochdale’s Jon Lane had the run of his life and was delighted to complete the 6 miles in 39 min 45 seconds.
Over at Helmshore near Haslingden, a dozen Rochdale Harriers competed in the Pilgrim’s Cross fell race. This was the ninth race in the local clubs Grand Prix series.
The leader from the outset was Joe Mercer from Skipton. Unfortunately some of the marker flags and one of the marshalls went missing and Mercer unintentionally took an incorrect route, leading to disqualification. The ultimate winner was Michael Corbishley of Rossendale Harriers in 39 min 17 sec, beating super-fast Andy Buttery into second place by just 3 seconds.
Rochdale’s men’s team finished third overall, thanks to impressive runs from Paul Leary (47:07), Martin O’Reilly (49:45) and Chris Armour (50:17).
John Armstrong’s excellent running performances continued with another win in the male veteran 55 category.
Anna Blomfield pipped Jenny Brown for the position of first Rochdale lady finisher, clocking 55 min 16 sec, an 11 second lead over Jenny on the 6 mile course with 1100ft of ascent.
The results for members of Rochdale Harriers at Pilgrim’s Cross were as follows:
35 Paul Leary, 47:07; 48 Martin O'Reilly, 49:45; 53 Chris Armour, 50:17; 55 Norman Eames, 50:24; 73 John Armstrong, 52:04 (winner MV55); 74 Mike Moran, 52:08; 78 Mark Walker, 52:40; 85 Stephen Leak, 53:07; 91 Anna Blomfield, 55:16; 93 Jenny Brown, 55:27; 95 Andrew O'Sullivan, 56:12; 97 Dennis Lucas, 56:31; 112 William Knox, 59:39.
