HARRIERS COIN IN GOOD PERFORMANCES ON MOORS
THE COINERS Fell race was the second event in the local Clubs’ fell race Grand Prix on Bank Holiday Monday.
The race is named after the notorious gang of 18th century, gold coin counterfeiters based nearby in Cragg Vale. The race stretched to 7 miles with 1,100ft of ascent. A strong headwind on the ascent of Stoodley pike, together with several bog sections, slowed runners on what was otherwise a fast course.
Nine members of Rochdale Harriers took part, putting in some excellent performances along the way.
In the Junior section, Jack Walsh ran well against high standard opposition to finish 15th in the under 14's, clocking 22 min 13 sec.
The Club’s first Senior finisher was Paul Leary, clocking 54 min 54 sec to take first male vet 45 position amongst the 5 Grand Prix clubs. Local teacher John Cook was not far behind, posting 56 min 32 sec which made him first male veteran 50 amongst the 5 clubs.
Jon Lane made third Rochdale Finisher and together with Leary and Cook the runners made 4th male team overall amongst all clubs taking part. On to the prizes, and Nigel Shaw and Brenda Robinson won their age categories overall to take home gift sets of locally brewed beers.
Nick Walsh, John Mayall and Jenny Brown decided to start off steady due to a steep climb after one third of a mile. This turned out to be a major tactical error because, unbeknown to them, there was a stile before the climb and the queue for it cost them several minutes.
Nick Walsh powered on to post 61 min 21 sec, literally flying over the finish line after tripping on the exceptionally steep, grassy descent. John Mayall clocked 65 min 39 sec and Jenny Brown was pleased to finish as 7th lady in 68 min 4 sec.
The third race in the Grand Prix takes place in Greenfield, Saddleworth on 31st May, starting 12 noon from Tanners’ Mill. The course is 3 miles with 950ft of ascent.
