Young Emily, piling on the pressure ...

THE CROSS COUNTRY season got off to a flying start with Red Rose league races at Hyndburn near Accrington.

Carly Needham’s fine run of form continued with a comfortable win in the ladies race.  She posted 18 min 28 seconds, beating international mountain runner Anna Lupton of Radcliffe AC into second place by 39 seconds.

The ladies team of Carly Needham, Anna Blomfield (21st) and Jan Needham (23rd) placed Rochdale ladies second from eleven, just behind Clayton Le Moors Harriers.

Emily Pilling (pictured) had a terrific race amongst the 66 athletes in the female under 11 category.   She battled with Rachel Bailey of Bolton United Harriers  right to the end, eventually winning by 1 second (8 min 31 sec).  Niamh Nugent was not far behind in 6th place (8:48).

Rochdale’s fastest under 11 boy was Jacob Slough who finished 9th (8:28).

In the men’s race, David Proctor, who is usually found on the track rather than in mud, finished 5th from 214 in 34 min 50 sec.
