WHAT A DIFFERENCE a year makes.  In last year’s Wilmslow half marathon, heat was the enemy, with unseasonably high temperatures in the 20’s making the race exhausting for many competitors.  Wind the clock forward a year and the competitors faced a very different problem - blisteringly cold conditions and strong wind providing a chill factor of -5C.

Many competitors donned thermal clothing and full body cover to cope with the difficult conditions.  The race organisers ordered 4000 foil blankets at the last minute.

Eleven members of Rochdale Harriers competed this year.  Anna Blomfield’s marathon training proved useful, enabling her to lead the Harriers for some time and posted a personal best time of 92 mi 40 sec.  After 5 miles, John Mayall took the lead and maintained it for the remainder of the race.  He clocked 91 min 27 sec.

Wes Young put in his best performance ever, slashing 6 minutes from his personal best time to post 97 min 12 sec.  Joanne Walsh and Amanda Thirsk improved on their 2012 times.

Results for Rochdale Harriers: John Mayall, 1:31:27 (PB); Anna Blomfield, 1:32:40 (PB); Nicholas Walsh, 1:33:26; Christopher Hill, 1:35:05; Wesley Young, 1:37:12 (PB) ; Stephen Leak, 1:37:17; Joanne Walsh, 1:58:10; William Knox, 1:58:10; Stephen Wild, 1:58:21; Amanda Thirsk, 2:01:40; and Emma Greenwood, 2:25:45.
